Home to one of Raleigh's early leading men, John Haywood, Haywood Hall was one of the town's largest private residences at its time. Construction was started on the Classical-style residence in 1799 and remained home to the Haywood family line until 1977. Inside the home, a mishmash of antique items includes both pieces originally placed within the home and other items representative of what would have been found in such a home during the early 1800s. Visitors can see the painted portraits of many Haywood family members as well as other landscape and still-life paintings decorating the walls. Outside, the home's gardens are a beautiful example of 19th century gardening and well worth a tour, especially during the blooming season. This historic residence sits close to the North Carolina State Capitol, a block north of Moore Square.
Open early Mar - late Dec: Thurs. 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Gardens open year round.
Free.
